What are the Benefits of Listening to Meditation Music?

Meditation is one of the best techniques to manage stress and for a good reason. It calms the mind and body, helping it stay more mindful and resilient against stress over time.

If you’re a beginner looking to deepen your meditation technique, adding some meditation music can reinforce its positive health benefits. With regular practice, meditation will feel much simpler and more natural especially for beginners. Here’s a rundown of the health benefits of meditation music.

5 Benefits of Meditation Music

1. Decrease stress level

Listening to a relaxing music regularly may help us manage everyday stress. A decrease in stress level can lead to improved memory retention and focus. Studies have shown that stress has a major impact on our sleep. Our body needs a good amount of sleep to function properly.

Mindful breathing paired with a relaxing music right before going to sleep can help disassociate yourself from your busy day and prepare for peaceful evening.

Listening to nature sounds may also boost serotonin in the body. Considered as a “happy hormone”, serotonin is natural chemical produced by the body that influences better sleep, positive mood and cognitive abilities.

2. Better focus on tasks

You might have noticed how easy it is to get things done when your mind’s all clear from distractions? With meditation music, you can easily focus on your tasks. The more focused your mind is, the more productive you are at work.

3. Rejuvenate and heal
Did you know that our body has the ingrained ability to heal itself especially when our mind and body are relaxed? Studies have shown some positive benefits when patients asked to listen to relaxing music before and after their surgeries in the hospital.

4. Improves physical health

It’s easy to stereotype meditation as solely a mental exercise. However, it’s a fact that the mind and body are intertwined in the everyday aspect of our lives.

Your thoughts affect your emotions, and your emotions can affect your body. The mind, emotions and the physical body are all connected dots  in one spiritual dimension of our lives.

Some of the physical benefits of listening to a meditation music are: lower high blood pressure, lower stress hormones like cortisol, ability to have restful sleep, decrease muscular tension, stimulate recovery from tiring activities, and so much more.

5. Enjoyable meal time

Health experts said that feeling relaxed while eating slowly is important to a healthy digestive process. Any music that sets a calm and peaceful ambience makes mealtime much more pleasurable for everyone on the dining table. When you eat quickly, it actually boost weight gain.

Tips to Choosing the Right Meditation Music

    • Choose a music that helps you relax and you enjoy listening to. I find that listening to spa-inspired music allows me to relax my body and focus on my breathing. Anything with slow tempo and without any lyrics can engage your conscious mind and turn off distractions. Create a playlist and start with a few songs. Listen to a bit more as you continue with your meditation practice.
    • Choose a comfortable position, whether it’s sitting on a chair or on the floor with your legs crossed. It doesn’t matter what position you like as long as it’s comfortable for you. Try not to slouch and just relax your muscles. Don’t try to over think and just let it be.
    • Close your eyes, sit up straight, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Let your face, shoulders, arms, belly and legs loosen up the tension. Try counting from 1 to 60 to help you feel the physical sensations of your breathing and body. Make your breathing steady and not forced.
    • It’s okay for your mind to wander off from time to time. Don’t be too hard on yourself. This still happens for those who are practicing meditation for years. Just make sure to divert your attention back to the physical sensation of your breathing. The goal here is not to quiet those noise inside your head but to let it pass by while staying mindful at the present moment in time.
